Ben Sage returns to WDCB's Folk Festival

Good news! I will once again be playing live on-air on the Folk Festival program hosted by Lilli Kuzma on WDCB 90.9 FM on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

I will be performing "American Maid" my original song about the importance of re-shoring America's manufacturing jobs, and a sort of descendant of Woody Guthrie's "Union Maid," to help celebrate this the 100th anniversary year of his birth.

I'm not sure exactly when during the show I'll play, but it will be sometime between 7 and 9 pm. Please tune in for this excellent program and, if you can't get it by radio, you can stream it online at WDCB.org.

Thanks in advance for tuning in!

Now there's lovebensage.bandcamp, too

We just added another way to find Ben Sage music online and that's LoveBenSage.Bandcamp.com!

You'll find lots of great songs there, both new releases and vintage "offical bootlegs" not available elsewhere. Listen to an entire song and, if you like it, download it at an attractive price directly from the Bandcamp platform. Enjoy!

"Let's Git Some Guinness In Us!"
Hey Everybody -- with St.Patty's Day just six weeks away, I've just launched my newest single, "Let's Git Some Guinness In Us," my tribute to the power of my favorite ale. I got some great help with this recording from my friends in Celtic Sounds, a top area Irish Music band, and we made the record at BeatBox Studios in Batavia. Hope you like it, and, if you do, please purchase a copy and encourage everyone you know who loves fun music to do the same. Thanks!!!

Ben Sage song used in Houston TV news story

Hey, This is both cool and a bit unnerving, in that I did not know in advance that it was going to happen. A fan of mine on YouTube posted and let me know that my "Life of a Comic Book Hero" had been used for a news story related to comics by a Houston Fox TV affiliate. Here's the link to the story:

http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/local/120113-artist-turns-comic-book-art-into-more-art

In other news, another fan on fb let me know that one of my songs was played today on WLUW, the student radio station of Loyola Univeristy in Chicago. Very cool! Many thanks to my friend, Murray Lawless Brothers for giving them my CD.

And thanks to everyone interested in my music for your support!

Summer - Fall wrap up

It's been a while since I posted last, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy. This summer I once again played music at the Aurora Farmers Market, serenading the folks picking out the juciest tomatoes and sweetest corn in town. It's a great way to start a summer Saturday morning.

I also attended for the first time the Folk Alliance Midwest Region (FARM) Conference, which was held in Bolingbrook, IL, this year. Really enjoyed taking in the wide variety of acoustic folk acts, which ranged from singer-songwriters to old-time string bands to those carrying on the traditions of balladry and musical storytelling. Met a lot of nice people and got to perform on a Performance Lane showcase. Next year's is in St. Lous, and I hope I can make it.

The following Tuesday, I peformed live on-air on WDCB's (90.9 FM in Chicagoland) Folk Festival program, hosted by the truly wonderful Lilli Kuzma. WDCB has kindly played several of my songs over the past few years, but this was my first time in the studio. I played two of my originals on my own, then joined the other studio guests for a jam on the song, Wagon Wheel, as Lilli read the closing annoucements. So exciting to be a part of live radio!

Folk Festival is on every Tuesday night from 7 to 9, and if you're not able to get it over the airwaves you can stream it online at www.WDCB.org.

Then, just recently, I attended a lecture and workshop on the healing power of music and voice presented by Grammy-award winner Darlene Koldenhoven. She is a tremendous vocalist, too, and she did a brief impromtu concert on the spot. She's truly a joy to listen to and learn from. Give yourself a treat and visit her website, DarleneKoldenhoven.com.

I've also finshed a couple of new songs that will be made available for listening and purchase soon. And I'm planning to once again return to the TAXI Road Rally in LA come November.

That's the latest from me. Hope you're out and about and enjoying this incredible Indian Summer weather we've been having.

My best always,

Ben Sage

Gearing up for one or more new albums

Hello Friends and Fans,

It's been a cold, but productive winter here on the Benderosa, where I've been working diligently on a whole herd of new songs, many of which are in the Country and Americana genres, and a few of which are more alt-rock or folk-rock.

I'm also on the lookout for future bandmates in my area, starting with the drums and bass. The rhythm section is the foundation of a song, whether it's recorded or performed live, and I want to find muscians with the right chemistry. I love the sound that Robert Plant got on his last two albums and I think that percussion can do a lot more than keeping time and laying down the backbeat, although those are tremendously important, too.

I'll keep you posted on my progress. Meanwhile, I hope to see you at 8:00 pm, Monday, March 28, at the Double Door in Chicago. Just $5 gets you a rousing half-hour set with me plus four more acts. It's an Americana extravaganza.

Till then, cheers,

Ben Sage

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aurora, IL – Americana singer-songwriter Ben Sage today announced the release of Plenty of Gold, his third album and first in five years.

Plenty of Gold features 17 original songs spanning a wide array of Americana genres, including country, folk, roots rock, praise, r&b and blues. Several tracks revive elements of songs from the doo-wop era to create a fresh, new sound that may be its own sub-genre.

The album kicks off with Still Playing Rock 'n' Roll, a ragged, rowdy salute to rock's pioneers and their enduring legacy. Next up is Sun Power Me, a fun-loving paean to the many benefits of solar power. What follows are love songs, philosophical musings and songs of spiritual reflection, and even more love songs. As the lyrics to one song note, “Take a look at the world and tell me it don’t need love.”

Sage demonstrates his multi-instrumental chops on this disc, providing lead and backing vocals, lead and rhythm guitar, and performances on any number of supporting instruments, from harmonica and cornet to clave and kazoo. He even employs whistling to brighten the title track, an acoustic ballad with an otherwise dark edge.

Throughout Plenty of Gold, Sage’s melodic, natural voice is strong, supple and adaptable to the specific tune he is performing at the moment. But whether inflected with country twang for the 70s-style trucker ballad, Dialin’ For My Darlin, or pop breathiness for the Beatles-esque In Your Arms, Sage’s unique identity is stamped on every cut. Likewise, his lyrics conjure a multitude of moods and shadings, yet collectively paint the picture of a very singular artist.

Overall, the album embodies the retro purity of a bygone era in American music with a slightly lo-fi charm.

Plenty of Gold is available now at CDBaby.com, iTunes.com, LoveBenSage.com, and elsewhere online, for the recession-friendly price of just $9.99.  Sage's other releases include, In Word and In Deed (2004) and Troubadour (2005). For inquiries and bookings call Vera 9-5 M-F at 630-892-3978.
